Establishing Sustainable Laparoscopic Training for Gynecological Surgeons in Rural Ghana
The First Steps
In November 2023, a team of German gynaecologists specialising in minimally invasive surgery travelled to Holy Family Hospital in Techiman to begin training local gynaecologists. The program combined lectures with hands-on sessions on Pelvi Trainers, and patients were operated on together with experienced MSIP partner surgeons. A certificate was handed to Dr. Ibrahim Soale Friko, Head of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Techiman. In August 2024, colleagues in Ghana performed the first laparoscopy at Holy Family Hospital entirely on their own — a major step for local medical care.
Ten Days of Impact
In March 2025, a team from UKSH Kiel returned to Techiman for a ten-day exchange, supporting and training the Ghanaian colleagues through more than ten laparoscopic operations. For the first time, laparoscopic training progress in Ghana will be documented in an international medical journal.
